New book supports algal bloom recovery

A sweet suite of sunny stories supporting the sea

ADELAIDE, South Australia, Australia 1/5/2026

There was good news this week, with the report the algal bloom devastating the South Australian coastline seems to be over. Now the recovery begins, and Adelaide author Joni Page is pleased to be contributing.

“My second book, Beach Shorts – a Sandthology, launches on 3 May 2026, and I wanted to give back to the beautiful beaches that inspired it. Part proceeds will go to supporting reef restoration in South Australia.”

Joni has degrees in teaching and psychology, and Honours in education. She was part of the award-winning anthology, The Sound of Silence: Journeys Through Miscarriage. Her focus on chasing better lives is reflected in her optimistic fiction and helpful non-fiction. Her heartwarming and hilarious debut novel, The Feminist EarthMother PartyGirl, about identity and ambition, was released in 2025.

Beach Shorts – a Sandthology is a diverse collection of short, intriguing tales that take the reader down to the beach and beyond, as her eclectic range of characters look toward shaping better destinies.

She needs fresh air and sunshine. She grabs her keys and jacket and drives to the beach, dawdles along the water’s edge, eyes downcast, searching the shoals of shells drained onto the sand. She picks up a specimen here and there: some she keeps, some she discards. She skims a few small, smooth, flat pebbles along the water, feeling a restlessness within her.

But the beach has done its job, and home she goes.
