It’s no secret that I love nature.
A look at any of my writing or visuals will implicate me as a person who enjoys the natural world, be it a bee in a flower, a new veggie I’m experimenting with growing, a rose in a friend’s garden, or taking life-affirming climate action.
I didn’t grow up obsessed with revelling in the wild world. But I’ve been lucky enough to cross paths with people who’ve sent me down the road of being interested in good healthy nutritious food, the wonder of gardening, and the thrill of being part of the community who see a better world rather than a catastrophe ahead.
I had no idea what I was doing at first of course! But people have been generous with their knowledge, have answered my questions, have provided books and links and leads. I’ve picked the brains of gardening experts on the radio, spent days watching videos, listened to podcasts, come up with plans (and more plans and more) and infiltrated my thinking with exciting solutions.
I’ve listened to pioneer businesses who’ve enabled me to be an early adopter of technology like solar panels and home batteries and electric cars. I’ve bought rechargeable batteries and organic food and heritage/open-pollinated/organic seeds. I’ve been grateful for those who have gifted me plants and cuttings and seeds and information.
My gratitude for the people who’ve helped me and for nature itself is great for my sense of well-being. My excitement at the wonder of the “Hooray!” and the “Look at that!” moments, the realisation we are walking way gentler on the Earth, the sheer enjoyment of bringing in a cucumber or an apple or standing silently as the bees work their magic – these things are priceless.
It’s just a joyous way to live.
