Setting up for success

Some partners are not good with remembering dates. They might forget your birthday, or your anniversary. This can be really disheartening because if they really loved you, they’d remember, right?

Not necessarily so. It’s important not to equate remembering once-a-year dates to how much they love you. It’s a “test” you don’t need to do with them.

Here’s a simple way to make it easy for them to make you happy: remind them.

That’s right, don’t wait for them to forget, just so you can yell at them; this fun wears off after a few years. Just give them plenty of notice, and remind them often.

Here’s another tip: give them a long list of things you’d like to receive. Your partner can choose a number of presents, but not all, from the list, which means you get things that you want, but it’s still a surprise because you don’t know which of the things on the list you’ll be getting. Be specific about how much to spend or how many gifts to get; they’ll appreciate the ground rules. Give them ideas where to buy the gifts. If your finances are intermingled, you might even buy some of the harder gifts yourself, to give them a good start.

If all else fails, buy yourself some gifts from you. It’s an act of self-love that will stand you in good stead.
